The first of the project that kicked off NZTA’s “Western Ring Route”. Starting back in 2011, with the replacement of Selwood Road Bridge the Lincoln Road Interchange Upgrade started the complex, narrow and challenging work of upgrading a functioning high capacity motorway whilst maintaining close to full function. Parallaxx joined on the journey providing TMP design and fulfilled the role of Traffic Manager for a period as well.
Traffic Management Project Management
Wynyard Quarter & Halsey Street Wastewater Upgrades
The Wynyard Quarter area has been a developing part of downtown Auckland for some time. With the obvious streetscape improvements comes significant underground utility improvements. Range of these upgrades are across the Wynyard Quarter area. With significant upright construction and other road improvement works – this means competing for workspace and overlapping worksite environments are almost guaranteed.
Waterview Tunnel
The Biggest project ever awarded at the time in New Zealand. The was the connection between the SH20 and SH16 by constructing a 2 2.4km tunnels one for each direction. This program and staging had to work with Causeway and St Luke’s project on SH16. Due to the nature of the intersection design and upgrade requirements there was significant challenges to keep the traffic moving.
Transmission Gully Motorway
AS per the NZTA website “one of the most significant single pieces of new road construction in the lower North Island”. And it is not an understatement. The project spans 27km from Mackays crossing to Linden. Most of the project was build in Greenfields but the tie in point has significant challenges due to the narrow carriageways to keep the traffic flowing while construction is happening.
Te Atatu Road Corridor Improvements
The Te Atatu Road Corridor Improvements project involved providing additional bus lanes along Te Atatu road and upgraded pedestrian and cycle lane facilities and full depth pavement reconstruction. This corridor was severely congested with Vehicles, Shops and schools and additional community services.
St Lukes Cycleway Safety Improvements
The St Lukes cycleway safety improvements will make it safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the motorway ramps and St Lukes Road, and connect to the popular SH16 Northwestern Cycleway. Many of the project areas where situated alongside the motorway itself as well as on-ramps and off-ramps meaning major closures.
Southern Corridor Improvements
Construction of new widening on SH1 between Manukau and Papakura. This included adding at least one lane in each direction along the motorway, numerous new bridges, new ramps at the Takanini interchange whilst maintaining traffic flows on one of the busiest sections of the motorway network (significant peak flows each day, as well as weekends)
SH16 Te Atatu Road Interchange
As part of the western ring route suite of projects the construction and traffic staging had to be developed to work in unison with the staging of the 2 existing projects Lincoln Road upgrade and the causeway upgrade. This involved upgrading the intersection and realignment of all ramps. Additional complexity was added when the Te Atatu Road corridor improvements project started
Northern Interceptor
Construction methodology involved deep long trenches often on low volume roads. Clients preference was for the use of barriers however due to road constraints, these were often not able to be installed compliantly, posing additional risk to workers, as well as reducing the amount of work space affecting their productivity.
Northcote Cycleway
A complex project to add a supplementary footbridge over State Highway 1 on the Northern Motorway in Auckland. This project requires significant construction adjacent to and over one of New Zealand’s busiest motorways. All whilst ensuring minimal disruption and retained function of the major motorway interchange that the project is dissecting. The end result will be a fantastic and safe shared use facility however not before the challenges of construction through a fully functioning motorway itnerchange are fully overcome.
