Challenge

The new 2.5 km long pipe is part of the Northern Corridor Improvements Project, worked on jointly by Watercare and the NZ Transport Agency and sits in the lower section of the bridge spanning 110m. The upper portion is a new walkway/cycleway and provides better access to Albany Station and the nearby business district.

Solution

Trenching operations along East Coast Road presented significant challenges with property access, maintenance of traffic throughput, and safety. The contractor in this instances was extremely collaborative and we (Parallaxx) were able to work alongside them with innovative TTM design. We also provided onsite auditing and training to ensure a shared approach to onsite TTM risk.

Results

The project progressed ahead of schedule and key disruptive sections (Greville Road intersection for example) were completed over quieter periods to reduce impact on local traffic. A number of useful learnings came from this project and have already been deployed on future projects with he same contractor such as the Northern Interceptor.
